YNP Report - October 3, 2024
Not much new this week in YNP fishing. Bright skies and warm temps for this time of year continue to dash the hopes and dreams of would be streamer enthusiasts, but anglers with an open mind and willingness to stay flexible have been able to put together some great days. There continues to be a mix of fall and late summer conditions out there, and the angling opportunities oscillate accordingly. Conditions like these require adaptability, and the ability to play multiple games through the day with streamers, soft hackles, dry flies, and nymphs.
Mornings and evenings continue to offer the best opportunities to target migrating browns with streamers and soft hackles on the Madison River in YNP. October is prime time for this fall fishery, and we will continue to see more and more fish moving into the system every day. This is a great place to start or finish a day of fishing in YNP. Light levels are lower, air temps are cooler, and fish will be more active.
As the autumn sun rises high in the sky, and temps warm look to other fisheries in the park like the Gallatin, Gibbon, Firehole, or Lamar for an afternoon session. Sparse hatches of small size #20-22 baetis mayflies could be possible. If not, nymph fishing will be consistent and productive.
