put our experience to work for you
Here at Big Sky Anglers we have lived, worked, and explored throughout Patagonia for decades. We have learned a lot over the years about what you need in different places, in different conditions, and at different times of the season. We've worked closely to develop new flies, and refine new fishing strategies. We are on the cutting edge of advancements in gear designs, and in constant contact with the Estancia Laguna Verde team on the ground to keep our finger on the pulse of current conditions.
Simply put, Lago Strobel ("Jurassic Lake") and the Rio Barrancoso are probably THE BEST place on earth to catch giant, wild rainbow trout. If you are looking to catch the biggest rainbow trout of your life this is the place!
The remoteness of this location, and ruggedness of the terrain demand the right gear that will stand up to the elements, and keep you fishing for that fish of a lifetime.

Rods & Reels
A medium to fast action rod is a must at Jurassic Lake where the wind is common and the fish are large and powerful. It is common to fish large dry-dropper rigs and streamers during the same day, and a rod that will handle both techniques is a must. A 9 ft 8 wt rod will be your go to. At times it is nice to have a 9’6" or 10' 8 wt or 7 wt for longer distance casts. The extra length is also useful when a high backcast is needed while casting from shore. Trips like this are the reason to buy a high-end reel with a smooth, durable drag. You are fishing for the fish of a lifetime, and a smooth drag can be the difference when landing bigger fish. An extra reel for your sink-tip line is recommended.

fly Lines, leaders, tippet
A weight forward floating line with a heavy front taper is required at Jurassic Lake to punch casts into the wind and deliver large flies.
You will also want to have a 15-25 ft intermediate sinking tip line for your 7 or 8 wt rod. the Rio Predator and Outbound Short are both good options in the full floating and hover/intermediate options.
0x-3x fluorocarbon tippet and 9' 0x-2x fluorocrbon leaders are best for most situations.

Outerwear & Apparel
Located in the Southern Hemisphere, Argentine seasons are opposite from those in the North. November & December are early spring and can be fairly cool, compare them to May and June in the northern hemisphere. January, February, & March are the warmest months of the year and could be compared to July, August, and September in the States. April & May are fall months and will have cooler temperatures. Weather in the mountains can change rapidly and it is always a good idea to have some warm clothing layers along.
