Trout Spey

Collection

Spey \'spā\ geographic place. A river in northeastern Scotland famous for its Atlantic salmon angling and general lack of backcast space.

Spey cast \'spā 'kast\ noun. A dynamic, change-of-direction fly-fishing cast that lacks an aerialized backcast. Instead. the cast has a "backcast loop" that is formed below the rod tip and anchors on the water's surface beside and in front of the caster.

Spey rod \spā `räd\ noun. Any fly rod used to execute a Spey cast. Most anglers typically equate two-handed fly rods with Spey casting, though single-handed fly rods can likewise be Spey-casting tools. Spey rods are most closely associated with fishing for Atlantic salmon and steelhead.

Until now, that is:

trout Spey \'traút 'spā\ noun. Fishing for trout using the casts, principles, and tackle associated with Spey casting and Spey rods. While most commonly associated with swinging wet flies and streamers on moving water with light two-handed rods, "trout Spey" as a genre of fishing also includes presentation of dry flies and nymphs with active retrieves, dead drifts, and tight-line swings. In every environment where trout swim, and for every type of presentation of ever category of fly, Spey casting is applicable in some way. Trout Spey is as broad and diverse a genre as trout fishing itself.

"WHEN I PICKED UP A SPEY ROD FOR THE FIRST TIME I NEVER IMAGINED WHERE IT WOULD TAKE ME.  I NEVER GUESSED HOW MUCH JOY IT WOULD BRING ME, OR HOW, IN TIME, THAT BEAUTIFUL CAST WOULD CONNECT ME TO SO MANY GREAT PEOPLE. "
