Lago Strobel (aka Jurassic Lake) & Rio Barrancoso, Santa Cruz Province, ARGENTINA
Simply put, Lago Strobel and the Rio Barrancoso are probably THE BEST place on earth to catch giant, wild rainbow trout. If you are looking to catch the biggest rainbow trout of your life this is the place! Estancia Laguna Verde is very unique in that, unlike other operations, it offers anglers access via private roads to a huge amount of the eastern shoreline of Jurassic Lake.
REMOTE COMFORT
Given the incredible remoteness of Lago Strobel and Estancia Laguna Verde, it is a wonder that any lodging exists at all. But it does, and the first class food and wine, and extraordinarily comfortable lodging are a true testament to the Estancia’s commitment to providing a phenomenal experience for their guests.
A variety of techniques including retrieving flies on intermediate and full sink lines, indicator tactics, and even large dry flies can be used to target these giant rainbows that cruise the shoreline in search of scuds and baitfish. After many seasons of hard work, the Estancia now offers access to more than 14 km of Lake Strobel shoreline, including several bays that are protected from the famous Patagonian wind. In spots such as Monsters bay, Camelot Bay, Finger bay, Tasmania Bay, Sea Bay, Puesto Bay and Dry Fly Bay fly fishers can find outstanding sight fishing even in the hardest of conditions.
Like any stillwater fishery, the angling changes throughout the year at Strobel, and having access to so much of the shoreline allows guests to Estancia Laguna Verde to really take advantage of the situation at hand. If there is a specific type of stillwater angling that you enjoy the most, be sure to ask us about the best time to be at Jurassic Lake.
Estancia Laguna Verde is not just a stillwater location. The incredible Rio Barrancoso, the one and only tributary of Lago Strobel, runs for more than 10 km through our Estancia, which allows our guests to access most of its fishing. The Estancia has divided their portion of the river into three sections, each with two “beats” used to spread and moderate angling pressure. The fishing is mostly done with floating lines using streamers, nymphs, big dry flies and even mouse patterns.

The Lodge main building is a typical “Estancia house” accommodating up to 10 anglers per week. It has 7 bedrooms, each with 2 single beds and “en suite” bathrooms. The spacious living room overlooking Laguna Verde is one of the favorite spots in the lodge. Anglers can sip on a cocktail while enjoying some TV, reading from the library, or wrapping up some bugs at the fly tying.
The Lodge has Satellite and IP telephone and free unlimited wireless Internet access. Windmill generators, with fuel generators as back up, guarantee the energy demands of the Lodge, providing electricity 24 hrs a day.
