Here at Big Sky Anglers we have a special place in our hearts for those beautiful green rods made by our friends over at RL Winston in Twin Bridges, Montana. The tradition, legacy, and soul of Trout Country are apparent as soon as you pick up a Winston Rod. It’s called the “Winston Feel”, and no other model epitomizes this more than the Pure. 

We were pleased to learn that Winston’s most recent design efforts were going back to their roots, and focusing on the new Pure 2. Updated with new, lighter, more advanced graphite and resins, the Pure 2 has all of the elements of a contemporary, cutting edge fly rod married perfectly with the look and feel of a classic Winston. 

We’ve had a chance to fish and cast the new Pure 2 this summer, and feel that it is a superior dry fly tool. Longtime Winston alumni will find the rod to feel lighter, and the action to be more crisp and lively than previous models. Though, we found that pairing the rod with a line having a slightly heavier front taper like the SA Amplitude Infinity (especially with the 9’ 4wt & 5wt) will bend the rod deeper awakening some of that vintage “Winston Feel”without overloading the tip, a true testament to the new materials and design.
