Save the Date - Wretched Mess Festival, September 5&6, 2025

The Wretched Mess Fest is not merely an event, but a celebration of the eccentric, and a testament to the fusion of art and angling.
Join us September 5th and 6th, 2025 in West Yellowstone, Montana for The Wretched Mess Art, Music, and Fly Fishing Festival. What began as a quirky tribute to the legendary Wretched Mess News is now a full-blown two-day event, honoring the creative legacy of David Bascom, aka Milford “Stanley” Poltroon.
For those familiar with the lore of West Yellowstone’s fishing community, the name “The Wretched Mess” might ring a bell. If not, allow us to explain.
Why “The Wretched Mess”?
In the 1960s–80s, The Wretched Mess News was West Yellowstone’s hilarious and irreverent parody of fly fishing culture. Through outrageous satire, unique artwork, and unapologetically “honest yellow journalism,” David Bascom carved out a niche that’s still beloved by anglers today. His art and humor continue to inspire — and this festival is our way of keeping that spirit alive.
A Tribute to David Bascom
David wasn’t just a fly fisher and artist — he was a force of nature. His passion for wild places, creative expression, and the absurdities of our beloved sport remind us not to take ourselves too seriously and to make space for joy. This event is our way of saying thanks.
In 2023, a group of passionate locals and conservation groups hosted the first Wretched Mess Art Festival. Inspired by the success of that one-day event, and with a nod to the fly fishing roots of the original publication, the event has grown into something more: a festival that celebrates art and angling in true Wretched Mess style.
This festival is not just an event; it’s an experience designed to celebrate the artistry of fishing and the joy it brings to enthusiasts like yourself. Join the mess for a variety of fly fishing presentations, competitions, fly tying, live music, art, apparel, and more! We cannot wait to share this unique and memorable occasion with you in West Yellowstone.
