meet Hoovie
Steve Hoovler is a co-owner and senior guide here at Big Sky Anglers with over 25 years of local fishing and guiding experience. He grew up fishing in Pennsylvania and was introduced to Yellowstone Country by one of his high school teachers. What a deal! Our high school teachers introduced us to math homework and Charles Dickens. Steve attended Penn State University where he was a member of the Penn State FlyFishing Club.
Steve turned that love of sharing his passion for fly fishing into a career. During college he spent summers in West Yellowstone, MT working for Blue Ribbon Flies. After school, Steve moved to Montana full time, and went on to become a partner at Blue Ribbon, managing the shop for 7 years before moving on into new adventures. Before joining Big Sky Anglers in 2016, Steve worked as an outfitter in Montana and Yellowstone National Park, guiding on world-class waters like the Madison, Yellowstone, Missouri, and the back country of Yellowstone Park. When he wasn’t guiding in Yellowstone Country, Steve hosted fishing trips for small, private groups to international destinations like Argentina, Belize, and the Bahamas. Steve’s favorite fishing partner is his son, Jack, and despite being a really smart guy with generally good judgement, he loves rooting for his Philadelphia Phillies.

I grew up fishing with my dad, in a state with great fly fishing history and culture, as well as a bunch of great fisheries and hatches.
There's not much of an off-season these years, but I enjoy hunting in the fall, and skiing through the winter.
I've been lucky enough to fish all over the world, and continue to travel every year, but the top of my list is always June on the Henry's Fork.
