meet Jonathan

Jonathan Heames got his start in the fly fishing industry in 1994, under the tutelage of Bob Jacklin. He quickly established himself as not only a personable and professional guide, but also as one of the fishiest guides on the water. Jonathan studied every fishery within striking distance of West Yellowstone, and became one of the most sought after guides on Idaho’s Henry’s Fork. When the founders of the Trouthunter acquired Jacklin’s Henry’s Fork Idaho Outfitters license, Jonathan and Bob amicably parted ways. Jonathan continued to guide the Henry’s Fork for Trouthunter, and founded Jonathan Heames Fly Fishing which offered guided fishing in Montana and Yellowstone Park. In 2004, he and his wife Sarah began managing and guiding for a well-known Chilean fishing lodge in the winter months. In 2016, Jonathan Heames Fly Fishing merged with Big Sky Anglers, where Jonathan is a co-owner and senior guide on the Henry’s Fork and other waters.

position - co-owner, outfitter, travel host

I grew up in a military family, but my youth was primarily spent in Italy and Southeast Arizona.

Since the beginning!

The gift of fishing was given to me by my father and grandfather. Fly fishing came later for me, as I entered high school, when I came across an old fly rod that an uncle had left my brother and I. The trout that ate the dry fly that I managed to present after flogging the water for an hour is responsible for my conversion to fly fishing. That was an image that has stuck with me forever and fueled my early pursuits in the sport.

Shovel snow! For many years I spent the winter months guiding and working in Chilean and Argentine Patagonia. These days find me down there for shorter stints guiding and hosting trips. Generally, I'm in West Yellowstone for most of the winter, taking trips as I'm able.

Wherever I can manage to be next with a fly rod in my hand, whether it be on our home waters or an exotic and far away place!

Anything I could be that would surround myself with trout and the great outdoors!

I have two boys and a lovely wife that keep me busy, we enjoy doing all kinds of things together. I also enjoy drawing, reading and playing guitar.
