meet donovan
Donovan joined the BSA guide roster in 2017 and has been a cornerstone of the team ever since. His positive attitude, patient teaching style, genuine connection with anglers, and consistent ability to find fish have made him one of West Yellowstone’s most sought-after guides. Whether guiding experienced anglers or those looking to refine their approach, Donovan focuses on creating relaxed, memorable days built around learning, laughter, and quality fishing. He is especially passionate about spot-and-stalk dry fly fishing, helping anglers elevate their understanding through observation, strategy, and thoughtful presentation.
Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Donovan grew up fishing the small mountain streams near his hometown, picking up a fly rod at just six years old. What began as childhood curiosity quickly grew into a lifelong passion for wild places, trout, and sharing time on the water with others.
He first came to Yellowstone Country in 2009 on what he still calls a happy accident. A planned fishing trip to southern Colorado was canceled due to blown-out rivers, leading to a last-minute change of plans to West Yellowstone — a trip that ultimately changed his life. During that visit, Donovan made connections in the local fly fishing community and returned the following summer to work behind the counter at a fly shop. Within two years, he began guiding in both Montana and Yellowstone National Park, and he hasn’t looked back since.
His experiences on the water have shaped a strong commitment to conservation and sustainable practices that protect the future of our fisheries and wild places.
When fall arrives, Donovan and his wife pack up their camper and begin a slow migration south with their trusty pack of four bird dogs, hunting any and all upland species along the way. His fishing travels have taken him well beyond Yellowstone Country, including guiding in Chilean Patagonia and pursuing steelhead on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula and tarpon in the Florida Keys.
