Molly and I took a drive to Old Faithful yesterday evening, arriving just in time for a 6 pm eruption. Lots of locals in YNP today….finally a place to go for an evening drive, close to town. The Madison is runnning clear and looks very fishy, I would bet there are a few hold over brown trout lurking around…..and a few rainbows too. The snowpack at Old Faithfull is surprisingly deep, but melting on a daily basis. Huge, 10- 20 foot snow banks flank the road all around the parking areas at the Snowlodge, OFVC and the Ranger Station. At Buscuit Basin there were nice trout rising. Roughly 6 more weeks until the Madison and the Firehole are open to fishing…..to wet a line right now would be gluttonous. There has been a griz seen around Old Faithful as well, eating the dead bison killed off by winter. We also spotted a fish hawk…aka the osprey, near the Firehole Picnic Area. This is a great time of the year to head over to Chico Hot Springs for night of soaking and kickass food. hmmmmmmmm…..
This little Drahthaar is quite the looker and found her first birds a few days ago at just 5 months old. We have been working on heel, whoa, come and fetch for 10 minutes each day. I now have moved past the cap guns and banging pans to a 22 rifle in the field. All is well with gunshots as Stella comes up wagging her tail with the blast of a gun, a few more times out with the rifle and then on to a 20 ga. shotgun. While it is fun to think about Eastern Montana, there is a ton of great fishing which lies between then and now.
