Summer Solstice

With the Float section flowing 2720 cfs I figured that we might as well float from McAtee to Ennis on the longest day of the year. Usually that is two different floats, but it only took us 8 hours to float and fish. The river is still high, but clearing up ever more each day. There is about 2 feet of visibilty down there, but much more clear upstream around $3 Dollar Bridge. There was not much action from Mac to Varney, but once we got below Varney things picked up considerably. Big stone flies seemed to produce the best action and small lightning bugs also worked well. There are lots of caddis coming off around Ennis and the Salmon Flies are not far behind. We found big nymphs migrating toward the banks…..give it another week of sunshine and we’ll have the Big Bugs in our neighborhood. It sure will be nice to have this much water in the river and have the Salmon flies hatching. Long floats and dry flies, I can’t wait.
