Salmonflies….in Beartrap Canyon.

The big bugs are finally here.  They are actually right on time, but with all the anticipation, it makes it seems like they’ll never show up.  The weather in SW Montana has been rainy and cloudy, not exactly salmonfly weather.  This rain is a blessing as it will help the rest of the season fish extremely well. I temped the Madison yesterday at $3 Bridge and it was 50 degrees…..brrrrrr, that’s cold. There is warm weather on the way and with any luck we’ll see some big bugs above Ennis by the weekend.  Fishing a rubberlegs with a beadhead dropper should produce some solid fishing the next several days as the stoneflies begin their migration toward the banks.

Hebgen is almost full and PPL will most likely bump the flows in the next week or so.  The pipe on the north shore along HWY 287 is about covered up, when it is, the lake is full. PPL has started on the dam and so far things are going as planned.  They have diverted water in to the spill way and so far have not run into any problems….keep those fingers crossed.

I am headed back to the Missouri, dry fly paradise, tomorrow.  I will be there until Thursday night then back here for 3 days and then back to the Missouri for a week or so.  Lots of traveling, but it’s June…..
