Tweleve years ago I bought my first Ross Reel, a Cimmaron 2. It still functions like it was brand new. Many of the folks who jump in my boat over the years have fished this reel. I have several other reels, mostly given to me, one found along the road 15 years ago and never claimed at the fly shop I used to work at on the Misssouri River in Wolf Creek…..those were the days. That old SA System 2 which has been in my hands since the beginning of my Montana days, just froze up solid……..I love that reel. Maybe SA will fix it…..hmmmmmm….
The new Ross Evolution LT is pretty bad ass. Fully machined, 1 piece frame, 1 piece spool and made out of 6061-T6 proprietary aluminum alloy, there is nothing lighter on the market in its class. Ross is very proud of their drag systems, the LT 2 is no slouch. Made from Delrin 500AF with impregnated Teflon – space-age polymer that is durable, heat resistant, self-lubricating and maintenance free, one will try die trying to make it fail. My favorite trait of Ross Reels is their ability to wind up line with having to actually wind it up by hand. If you don’t know, Ross Reels are so smooth in their line pick up that an angler can just smack the spool in a downward motion and the reels spins like a LSD laden hipster at a Dead Show, clearing the line in the boat at your feet in seconds. Try this at home, get good at it. It will help next season when you are on the Missouri with Greg and I. It is actually pretty fun to see how quick one can do this. Your spouse will look at you like you’re crazy, especially if you do this during winter for extended periods of time. Our house cat, Oscar, loves it.
At $285 it won’t break the bank and it will last the rest of your fishing career. Your kids will thank you…..hand me downs are how I got almost every piece of fishing gear as a kid.
