BOOK CLINIC

A full day guide trip is the best way for a guided angler to experience the awesome fishing and diversity of waters in our area.

Going out all day allows for greater travel distance, access to our full range of fisheries, and more time spent on the water. We offer full day trips in either the walk/wade or the float trip format.

In many instances, our guides incorporate wading into their float trips, using the boat for access to the best areas as well as a platform for fishing between stops. Depending on the situation, you may even spend the morning fishing from the boat, and the afternoon fishing the same or a different river on foot.

With a full day trip, the options are nearly limitless.

At Big Sky Anglers, we’re more than just fishing guides. We are stewards, outdoorsmen, naturalists and conservationists who do what we do because fishing is who we are and what we love. Fly fishing holds a special spot in our lives and we want to help visiting anglers discover that same extraordinary place for themselves.

Top quality, but gentle instruction is the trademark of our focused and relaxed style of guiding. Big Sky Anglers employs some of the Rocky Mountains’ most patient and experienced guides to provide you with an unforgettable fishing experience. Whether you’re a novice, expert, or somewhere in between, there is always something to learn from a day of guided fishing.

A day or two of fly fishing with us will help novice anglers cut the learning curve and give the more experienced angler a chance to hone skills or learn new techniques. The first time a brown trout peaks its nose out from behind a rock and grabs your dry fly, you will be addicted. It may be the fishing that first grabs you, but it’s the experience of an entire day spent on the river in good company that will make you a lifelong fly fisherman and, hopefully, a lifelong friend of Big Sky Anglers.

Your trip can and will be tailored to provide what you are hoping to get out of it. If you want the trip to have a more instructional focus, maybe honing in on specific techniques or skills that you’d like to improve, please let us know and we will be sure to set you up with the right guide on the right water.

If you just want to get out anywhere where you will have the best chance of getting into some fish, we can arrange that as well. The most important part is to communicate that with us ahead of time.

We are happy to discuss options and go over the details with you. It’s your trip, and we are here to make it as fun and memorable as possible. Just give us a call and we will get the ball rolling.

We offer Full Day Guided Trips and three-hour-long Introduction to Fly Fishing Clinics in both walk/wade and float fishing formats. We conduct our trips on waters including: the Madison, Gallatin, Yellowstone, and Missouri Rivers and Hebgen Lake in Montana; the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River, and Henry’s Lake in Idaho; and the waters of Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone Park is walk/wade only. Our forest service permits also allow us to guide on many of the areas smaller and more remote streams and lakes.

Generally our trips are designed for two anglers per guide. Walk/wade trips can accommodate to 3 anglers per guide in some instances. If you have a larger group, we can easily arrange for multiple guides to fish with your group.

Trip fees cover your guided fishing, instruction, transportation to and from the river, flies, leaders, a hearty sack lunch (full day trips only), and non-alcoholic beverages. Wader/wading boot rental and rod/reel/line rental are also included in the trip fees when needed.

Anglers who fish with us are responsible for obtaining and bringing valid fishing licenses, appropriate clothing for the expected conditions, and personal items such as polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, fishing hat, and rain gear. We also encourage you to bring along your own rod/reel/line setups (5 and 6 weight with floating lines are standard), waders and boots, and a camera.

If you will be fishing in Yellowstone Park, your general Park entry pass will also be required. If you don’t have one, they can be obtained when we enter the Park the day of your trip. We sell Yellowstone Park fishing licenses in the fly shop and have a computer station set up for customers to purchase ID and MT licenses online, so we can easily set you up with the right licenses for your guide trip if you don’t already have them.

We offer Introduction to Fly Fishing Clinics for folks who would like to begin to experience fly fishing in our area and learn the basics of fly fishing, and for experienced anglers who would like to upgrade their existing quiver of fly fishing skills. These clinics last approximately 3 hours. Plenty of fish are caught during these clinics, but it is important to know that the focus is primarily instructional and introductory.

We offer Introduction to Fly Fishing Clinics in either the walk/wade or the float trip format. In most instances, we encourage folks to start out wade fishing as it allows for a slower pace, and more direct, one-on-one attention from the guide. Introduction to Fly Fishing Clinic floats are an option for anglers with more limited mobility, and your guide may opt to use the boat for transportation between spots where you stop for instruction and fishing on foot. Really, it comes down to what is going to work best for you.

We are only able to offer up to three Introduction to Fly Fishing Clinics per day during the summer, so if this is an option you are interested in, we recommend contacting us well in advance.

These clinics are limited to the waters closest to town to minimize travel time and maximize teaching time! For a beginner angler, these clinics will focus on everything from rigging up a rod and casting, to knot tying, fly selection, reading water, wading, and other streamcraft. For an experienced angler, one of our custom tailored clinics might focus on teaching new techniques including the following:

Advanced fly casting

Advanced nymphing tactics, including Czech or Euro nymphing,
tight line nymphing, and indicator methods

Swung fly and/or two handed rod casting and fishing

Advanced dry fly methods, including matching the hatch, pocket water,
active presentations, and technical spring creek approaches

Streamer fishing tactics including advanced sinking lines, rigging, retrieves,
and presentations on foot and from the boat

Introduction to stillwater (lake) fly fishing

Introduction to rowing a raft or driftboat
