Madison River below Quake Lake

Old Man Winter has arrived in Southwest Montana. This morning we woke up to 3 inches of snow at 6666 feet and there is quite a bit more in the mountains surrounding town. Starting 3 days ago, we had masive winds down on the river and in town. There were gusts up to 50-60 mph and sustaining winds around 30 mph……downstream. Rowing the boat was royal pain the the butt….so was fishing. We did however manage to catch a few very nice trout one of witch was a rainbow that measured 19 3/4. The day before my client hooked fish all day long on a #12 Royal Trude and #16 Parachute BWO. We found quite a few fish on the banks and in the slicks of the larger rocks. Thankfully, the wind did not blow as hard that day. Placement of the fly was not crucial, but drifting the fly drag free was a must. I would expect the river to keep fishing pretty well on into Fall with nymphs, streamers and dry flies.
