Joe Moore is a co-owner and senior guide here at Big Sky Anglers. He grew up in the small mid-western town of Quincy, Illinois, along the banks of the Mississippi River. In the late 1960’s Joe’s dad, Tom, guided in the Bob Marshal Wilderness at the Diamond R Ranch. Teaching elementary school in Quincy eventually drew Tom back home, but trips were made bi-annually to Montana starting around 1978 with his brothers and close fishing buddies. Tom introduced Joe to fly fishing at age six, while on family vacation to Yellowstone National Park and the Town of West Yellowstone. After chasing bass, bluegill, channel catfish and trout around the mid-west, Joe headed out West for the second time with his Dad in 1992. Sometime during that magical three weeks of traveling around Montana and Yellowstone, living in a pop-up camper, and fishing from dawn to well after dusk, it all clicked.
During his college years, Joe began his career working for Montana River Outfitters on the Missouri River in Wolf Creek. Three seasons later he moved to West Yellowstone to work for one of the local shops, and in 2004 he founded a small outfitting business called Big Sky Anglers.
In all, Joe has been guiding clients on the Madison, Gallatin, Missouri, Yellowstone and the waters of Yellowstone National Park since 1999. Joe has spent time fishing in Argentina, British Columbia, the Rocky Mountain West, Alaska, the South East, Belize, the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. He is well regarded by guides and outfitters across Montana and Idaho – a testament to his friendly nature, professionalism, strong work ethic, and outstanding skill as a guide. Joe is also a member of the R.L. Winston Fly Rods and Hatch Pro Staffs, and is a signature fly tier for Montana Fly Company. You will find many of his fly pattens in our bins.
When he isn’t guiding or out fishing himself, he loves adventuring on foot or skis with his amazing wife Molly, or bird hunting with his Drahthaars Stella and Charlie.
