Missouri River Guided Fly Fishing

I arrived home from the Missouri yesterday afternoon to excited dogs and a plethera of mosquitoes. The warm temps have cranked up the biting flies and rivers have risen slightly as well. The Missouri is stable at 21,800 out of Holter Dam. Some folks think it will get even bigger. HUGE is about the only word [...]

The Missouri is getting bigger by the day. 21,000 cfs this morning. The word on the street is 23K by Tuesday. The good news is that is river is still nymphing pretty darn well. Crayfish, worms, stoneflies, pmd nymphs, caddis pupa are all fooling trout, but I haven’t really ventured to far away from the [...]

Yes, the river is big here in Craig, Montana – 18,000 cfs below Holter this evening. Swollen is another word for it…..it’s fishy too. Riggin’ deep in these flows, with lots o lead, is key. Some banks have us throwing short with a couple of BBs and double SJWs. They ate the pmd and caddis stuff [...]

Over the past 10 days, our weather has been a crazy as it gets. The Big Hole dropped 4000 cfs and then jumped 7000 cfs in three days. Snow, wind, all day rain and a little sunshine – but not much of the latter, is to blame for Montana’s crazy flows. My 10 day stint up [...]

The Missouri was red hot today for those who stuck above Craig. I witnessed some of the best high water nymphing I have seen in awhile. The weather was rough from about 10:30 am till 1 and a one point my hands went numb. Later in the afternoon, the rain let up and things were actually pleasant. [...]

From Holter Dam to the Dearborn, the Missouri River has been good to great at times. Greg, Biggie and I have been rowing customers down the Missouri and mainly staying above Craig. Greg and I ventured down to Stickney Creek today and found plenty of trout willing to eat worms and sow bugs. Tomorrow is [...]

Our weather for the past three days has been depressing. Wind, rain and now we get snow. Nothing makes one want to crack a few beers before 5 o’clock like a snowstorm in late May of a record snowpack year. The Trout Gods must be angry. It might be time to sacrifice a small dog (of the non-hunting [...]

With the stream flow graphs showing stability on the upper Madison, I was curious to see what might be dirty with today’s sunshine. At 2 o’clock this afternoon, Indian Creek and the West Fork were clean as a whistle. Up high on the Slide, the river was green, green from the ice melting off from Quake Lake. [...]

Just when I thought it might be safe to flip the driftboat and drag out the trailer……wham…..it dumped……..West Yellowstone called 8 to 10, Bozeman got 3. One could double that up in the mountains. Hard spring to be an elk or bison. How will the elk fare this spring? Well, there are still 2000 head in [...]
