Montana FWP has decided that a new management plan should be implemented on the Madison River in Montana. Read about it here. My opinoin will come out shortly……..this process is going to create some drama, that’s for sure. FOAM will be involved. Your opinoin, what ever it may be, is needed. In the months to come, [...]

Bill Cave & Friends just finished up their third trip the Missouri River in as many years. They love the fall for its solitude and the possibility of superb fishing. Weather can make or break a trip in October. Last year, in October, the group got the short end of the stick with the weather. [...]

More than one weatherman has been down right wrong the past 2 days. Yes, it snowed today, but the sun was shining most of the time. A breeze blew out of the north and sometimes west changing the weather patterns all day long. The soup during lunch was not madatory, but welcomed by all. Our bite was [...]

Hit the Missouri for a little recon today. Not too much bright sun, but the big clouds just wouldn’t stick around long enough to make anything pop. Bugs were few, the weeds were plenty and we caught some nice fish. It wasn’t stellar but fishing with G Falls and Mike Kuhnert is something that doesn’t [...]

Six days ago I snuck out of town and headed up to the Missouri for a 5 day stint with Jin, Mike and the rest of the crew who join us each year in Craig. While it was hard to leave the Madison River and it’s dry fly madness, I knew that the Missouri would [...]

I arrived home from the Missouri yesterday afternoon to excited dogs and a plethera of mosquitoes. The warm temps have cranked up the biting flies and rivers have risen slightly as well. The Missouri is stable at 21,800 out of Holter Dam. Some folks think it will get even bigger. HUGE is about the only word [...]

The Missouri is getting bigger by the day. 21,000 cfs this morning. The word on the street is 23K by Tuesday. The good news is that is river is still nymphing pretty darn well. Crayfish, worms, stoneflies, pmd nymphs, caddis pupa are all fooling trout, but I haven’t really ventured to far away from the [...]

Yes, the river is big here in Craig, Montana – 18,000 cfs below Holter this evening. Swollen is another word for it…..it’s fishy too. Riggin’ deep in these flows, with lots o lead, is key. Some banks have us throwing short with a couple of BBs and double SJWs. They ate the pmd and caddis stuff [...]

Over the past 10 days, our weather has been a crazy as it gets. The Big Hole dropped 4000 cfs and then jumped 7000 cfs in three days. Snow, wind, all day rain and a little sunshine – but not much of the latter, is to blame for Montana’s crazy flows. My 10 day stint up [...]

The Missouri was red hot today for those who stuck above Craig. I witnessed some of the best high water nymphing I have seen in awhile. The weather was rough from about 10:30 am till 1 and a one point my hands went numb. Later in the afternoon, the rain let up and things were actually pleasant. [...]
