“Cold Rain and Snow……..rain and snow. Let me out in the cold rain and snow” – Grateful Dead

Friday afternoon the weather blew in and with it came rain and snow. Saturday was just the same and my guide trip canceled. Throughout the day on Sunday, snow squals blew in one after another all day long. Happy Memorial Day!!!

The Madison has dropped back down a few hundred cfs (2080cfs @ Hebgen), the river has cleared to about 10 inches of visibility and the fish have been eating like they haven’t been fed all Winter. I fished yesterday with an old friend from N. Carolina upstream of Reynolds Pass bridge. A brown rubber leg stone, SJW, Pheasant Tail or a Micro Mayfly did the trick from about 11 am till 5 pm. The river is still brown, but more of a greenish-brown. The next few days should be great barring any 70 degree weather. I expect the Madison Valley to have another burst of snowmelt once the weather warms. We could very well have run-off until the third week of June. Just in time for Salmon Flies. The third week of June could be the time to get out here and fish. The big nymphs will be crawling and the river should be green’ up.
